is your business socially engaged?

BY Sumer Beatty — December 8, 2017

Have you embraced social media marketing? Social channels like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook are excellent ways to promote your organization among a captive audience. Many local, regional, and national companies are learning how to harness the power of social media and you can too!

As you plan your 2018 marketing strategy, social media is a must-have component. It’s a cost-effective way to reach your potential customers in a platform they are visiting now more than ever! Social activity also plays a vital role in your online engagement strategy and directs valuable inbound traffic to your website.

A recent report released by The Center for Marketing Research, University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth last month, outlined an upswing in social media adoption among Fortune 500 companies. The November 2017 study revealed:

  • LinkedIn is the most popular social network with Fortune 500 companies: 98% have accounts.
  • Twitter is the second most popular platform: 88% of firms have accounts.
  • Facebook is the third most popular with 85% having accounts.
  • Three-quarters of Fortune 500 companies now have YouTube accounts, up nine percentage points from last year.
  • 10% have Snapchat accounts.
  • Some 53% of Fortune 500 companies now have Instagram accounts, up from just 9% in 2013.

You might be wondering how to get started with social media marketing. Or, you may already have accounts and just need a little direction to boost engagement. Regardless of where you are in the process, the first step is creating or evaluating your content strategy. Your strategy will define your goals and your ideal target audience. It will also detail a schedule of topics and ideas as well as the method of delivery. For example, will you post links blog content, publish podcasts, feature infographics, share videos, or link to external content? Each business and audience are unique so it’s important to consider which social channels are best for your market and determine how they typically like their content served. Does your industry prefer infographics to simply in-depth content or are videos a preferred method of engagement?

Setting goals and establishing a plan are at the heart of your content strategy. Consistency is also essential. Regular posts create consistency and top of mind awareness. Likewise, testing effectiveness offers valuable feedback.
